Machiya-turned-Hostel GUEST HOUSE PONGYI opened in Kanazawa

Kanazawa, Ishikawa is a beautiful city with unique history and has many tourist attractions including Kenroku-en garden, Kanazawa Castle and 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art. A nice little guest house (hostel) aimed at backpackers called "Pongyi" opened this June, converting a machiya house. Might be a good lodging choice if you're travelling Japan on low budget.

Located in Rokumaimachi, Kanazawa. Five minutes walk from Kanazawa station.

"Pongyi" means monks in Burmese. The red house should be easy to spot.

Located by a river. Must be nice on a summer night.

Chabudai-and-zabuton style.

Free Internet access in the common room.

Machiya houses traditionally have narrow stairs.

Looks cosy. The rate is as low as 2,600 yen per bed including 100 yen donation to aid children in Asia.
